Home away: romantic Rouen

If you’re planning a romantic city break in France, Rouen is unlikely to be the first place that springs to mind. However, if you’re able to find a gîte as cute as this one, you might want to reconsider.

It’s located on the outskirts of Rouen, in Bois-Guillaume. Upstairs there’s a small kitchen and living room, and downstairs there’s a bedroom with ensuite shower and a separate WC.

It is in the garden of the owner’s house and has great views down the hill and across the many spires of the Rouen skyline.

I found it through HomeAway, a website for private homeowners and property managers to advertise holiday lets. I wanted somewhere quiet and intimate where my partner and I could celebrate our 19th anniversary together.

OK, so Rouen will never be Paris, but it proved the ideal setting for our long weekend together. Fine dining, great shopping and some time to relax. Parfait.

  1. Ah ah, thanks for this post. Good timing! We are traveling across the north of France in September. In 2010 we stopped in Rouen just for the day – looking around (very quickly) including the art gallery in the centre of town. And then having a late afternoon in Monet’s garden in Giverney. That was sensational.
This time we plan to train over from Brussels and Lille to Rouen – then hire a car for a week.
This place looks great. The HomeAway hint is great.

  2. Glad to be of help. I’ve found several holiday cottages through HomeAway over the years and never been disappointed. Enjoy your trip!
