In Menton, the locals have taken the expression ‘When life hands you lemons, make lemonade’ more literally than most. Today marks the beginning of the town’s annual lemon festival, la fête du citron.
Each year Menton, which lies on the Côte d’Azur and borders Italy, celebrates the citrus fruit in a festival that lasts for more than two weeks.
This year the theme of the event is 20,000 leagues under the sea. Previous themes have included space travel, European unification, sign of the zodiac and, er, Asterix.
In the centre of the town, the Casino Gardens become the focus of the celebrations, and lemons are used as exhibits, decorating enormous temporary statues.
Displays continue to get bolder and more imaginative each year. Perhaps that’s why the event, now in its 81st year, continues to draw tourists to the town.
The humble lemon has never been so appealing – or popular, apparently.
