When your wine bill is the largest part of your weekly grocery shop, you know something has to change. One option would be to drink less wine.
Another, of course, would be to cut costs. But how?
When I saw that supermarket Morrisons were offering 25% off wines and champagnes if you bought six bottles or more, my question was answered.
My partner and I decided to buy a selection of both inexpensive, midweek wines and better wines that we would save to have with special meals.
At the top end, they were selling a Meursault for £20, down from its usual £25. So, with 25% off, we got it for £15. That is a bargain for a wine of that quality.
At the other end of the scale, a fairly ordinary Côtes du Roussillon Villages came in at £5.25 with the discount.
Last night, I served a roast chicken basted with garlic, lemon and rosemary for dinner. To go with it, I selected a Chablis that we’d found marked down from £12 to £9. So, with the further 25% off, it came in at £6.75.
Suffice it to say, there were no complaints – either about the chicken or the wine.
