Sport is no good for you. I have lost count of the number of times I’ve read about a skier breaking a leg, a runner having a heart attack or a rugby player breaking their nose. Drinking wine, on the other hand, is great for you. You never hear about someone hurting themselves lifting a glass from the table to their lips.
And the health benefits of a glass of red wine are well known.
Today, however, you can combine both activities – thanks to the Marathon du Médoc.
At 9.30 this morning, 10,000 runners will set off on a 42-kilometre course around Pauillac. The route takes in almost 60 vineyards. Now in its 30th year, the theme of this year’s marathon is ‘countries of the world and their carnivals’, so you can expect to see clowns, dancers and plenty of other crazy costumes making their way around to the circuit.
Some will be running, but many are more likely to be staggering their way along the route. Instead of being given water at any of the stops, runners get wine – along with health snacks such as, erm, foie gras.
I’ve never been tempted to run a marathon. If I were to do it, I’d join those enjoying a gentle stroll around the chateaux that dot the route.
If I were to wear a pedometer, I might even manage to convince myself that the day counts as part of an exercise regime. Everyone wins.
