If you relied just on newspapers for your information, you’d think AirBnB was the only place to book accommodation these days. Call me old fashioned, but I went with Gîtes de France.
We booked a room at Le Manoir de Vilaines, in Varennes, in the Vienne département of Poitou-Charentes. The house is ideally situated for us – it’s near Poitiers, which meant we had covered the bulk of the journey by the time we arrived late yesterday afternoon.
According to their website, our hosts, Géraldine and Philippe, would welcome us to their charming 19th century home. We would, apparently, “be won over by the charm, luxury and elegance, but also the general comfort of the place”.
It certainly is a lovely house. Keeping it up may keep the couple busy for the rest of their lives.
We opted for a suite (pictured) that gives onto the garden. In reality, it’s far bigger than we need for the two of us but it looked so lovely in the photos.

Today we will continue our journey south. It will take us about four-and-a-half hours to reach Castillonnès, if we stick to the routes nationales.
