So here it is: merry Christmas! Everybody’s having fun… Forgive the Slade quote. I’ve been listening to Christmas favourites this week – all sung in French, bien sûr, courtesy of the Christmas market in the square outside the house.
Who knew so many Christmas classics had been translated into French?
Today, however, all is quiet. The village’s decorations are up, but not on.
Christmas Eve is the big night for celebrations among French families. We had some friends round for a buffet dinner in the house.
Today, we have friends arriving at around midday for champagne. We have Pommery chilling in readiness. It’s our favourite sparkling, thanks to a day at the Pommery château a few years ago.
At one o’clock, we’ll head over to L’Entrée, a chambres d’hôtes in the village – about 20m from our front door – where cordon bleu-trained chef Alex will serve us a 7-course meal.
We deliberately didn’t want a British-style Christmas lunch, so we’ll be having smoked duck, salmon terrine, a squash soup with caramelised pecans, a fish course, beef, then cheese and, finally, a roasted pear and amaretto dessert.

We can’t deny our English roots, mind. This evening, we will watch the Downtown Abbey Christmas special.
Soon, to quote Slade again, we’ll look to the future, it’s only just begu-u-un.
