Christmas market, Lille

The C word: Noël

As a kid, my parents would ask me in August for my Christmas list. Clearly, it took months to navigate their way into Woolworth’s to buy the latest Sheila B. Devotion LP.

So I am used to the festive season starting early.

With Guy Fawke’s Night now over, I reckon shops will feel justified in going full out for Christmas. There are only 48 shopping days to go, apparently.

But what do you get a Francophile for their bas de Noël? I am in need of inspiration for Damon. He prefers a surprise – he’s not the type of man to offer up a list for Santa in summer.

Fortunately, the new, December issue of FRANCE magazine has come to my rescue. First off, I spotted details of various French Christmas markets in France. We did that last year, and spent a terrific weekend in Lille (pictured).

But what really caught my attention was a 4-page feature on Christmas gift ideas.

Wine featured heavily among its suggestions – a box of red wine aromas, a set of coasters and a scratch-and-sniff guide to becoming a wine expert were all recommended.

Kitchen accoutrements also proved popular. A tea towel depicting the wines and cheeses of France, an apron saying ‘Bon Appétit’ and a Le Creuset camembert baker were among the offerings.

There were also suggestions for note cards, lavender pillows and even a Charles Trenet CD. I couldn’t help but feel that these might be aimed at, ahem, an older market.

The good news is that something I saw sparked an idea. I followed a link and found the perfect gift. I can’t say what it is, as Damon reads this blog.

What I can say is that I am confident that he will enjoy it.

So, it’s the first week of November and I’ve bought my partner’s Christmas present. My parents would be proud of me.
