Cuisines et Vins de France magazine

Food porn: cuisine et vins de France

For the past 10 years, my mother-in-law has bought me an annual subscription to Olive magazine for my birthday. Now that we’ve moved to France, she’s had to think afresh.

So imagine my surprise when Cuisines et Vins de France turned up in the post.

I don’t mind at all – in fact, I think there’s something rather special about having a magazine arrive every month. I may even have dropped the hint that I enjoy the magazine.

As its name suggests, it’s devoted to French food and wine. It’s packed full of recipes, product news, celebrity chefs and more.

I particularly like that wine is given its fair share of editorial space.

Among my favourite sections in the current issue are a comparison of two wines for spring, a profile of chabichou goat’s cheese from Poitou and a big feature on what’s in season right now. (Mackerel, Brocciu cheese from Corsica and mango, in case you’re interested.)

There’s also a piece on what to drink with steak tartare – from a classic red Bordeaux to a more adventurous southern white, such as Viognier, Marsanne or Grenache Blanc. An article on Lirac and Tavel, from the right bank of the Rhône, also held my attention.

A feature on low-calorie meals caught my eye too – I think I may need some of those as my subscription runs its course.

The magazine is bimonthly. My mother-in-law has bought me a 2-year subscription, so that I get a full 12 issues, as usual.

With 2 years covered, the big question now, of course, is what she is going to buy me for my birthday next year…
