A new year: a fresh start

Now this is what I call a happy new year. 2020 is going to be big for us – this is the year we’ll open our cheese-and-wine bar.

We’re down in Dordogne this week trying to move things forward. A lot still has to happen before we can open the doors.

Work is underway on the ground floor – the bar area – and replacing the shop window with folding doors has been given the go ahead.

Interior renovation, Dordogne

We’ve just found out that an ugly great post between the bar itself and the salon isn’t supporting the back wall, so it can come out. That will make that area so much easier to use.

The builder’s erected a frame in the bar, which we can cover with plasterboard and hide all the electrical wires behind. That’s handy, as we’ll need a lot of power for the fridges.

So far, not much has changed upstairs, apart from the old bathrooms having been ripped out. We’re still waiting for acceptable quotes for the plumbing and rewiring.

Meanwhile we’ve started on the fun stuff – furniture, fixtures and fabrics.

This week we went rummaging in several dépôts-ventes in and around Villeneuve-sur-Lot. We’ve ordered some lights online for the bar area and the bedrooms too.

We drove down with a car boot full of paint. Paint tends to be cheaper in the UK than in France and the Dulux store near work in London had a 20% off day recently…

So, we started painting the shutters this week.

“A trip to the chambre de commerce et d’industrie to set up the company… means we have a name for the new business…”

All in all, it’s been a busy week. In among the things we’ve accomplished while we are down here was a trip to the chambre de commerce et d’industrie to set up the company formally.

Which means we have a name for the new business… More about that very soon, I promise…

Hi Graham. We were back in the area 19-29 December and came to Belves twice looking for you. Shame we missed. I have some pix for you! We are your stalkers. Look out for us later in the year… Gail

  6. Bonne Année, Graham ! Congratulations on your exciting new life in Belvès. Also, please accept my apologies. It just dawned on me that I never followed your blog. Very rude, I know, but it has been corrected. A year ago, we spent a few days in Domme, you’re moving to a gorgeous part of France! Bon courage for the continued renovation, Claudia
